5HB Day 2. Thursday
Good evening,
After a good night’s sleep, the weather gods were slightly kinder to us this morning when we undertook our main day’s activities. Several children took inspiration from The Hobbit and enjoyed second, third, fourth and even fifth breakfasts, meaning they had plenty of energy for cycling and caving.
In fact, the rain held off all day for the cycling, which took place in Gisburn Forest. We were immensely impressed with the efforts and attitudes of all the children and their desires to push the limits of what they could manage. In total, the groups cycled for around two hours through a variety of challenges. Personal challenges varied, from riding to the top of a hill to navigating a twisty descent. Tired but content children boarded the bus for the drive back.

The caving was made slightly harder due to the extended walk to a dry cave. Our regular cave was flooded and so one higher up the valley was the setting this year. The afternoon group also had the draining battle with driving rain before they even arrived at the entrance. Again, the children were superb at managing not only themselves, but also ensuring that their friends were keeping in good spirits so that they enjoyed the activity. We are so lucky to have a class with such good camaraderie.
Before our excellent pasta meal this evening, some of the children went for a stroll around the local countryside, displaying great map reading skills. Again, the weather was “damp” but that didn’t stop their enjoyment of the experience. We even found a reminder of how tough life is in the Dales is for the animals.
