5KH Residential Day 2
5KH have been lucky with the weather compared to 5HB coming for the second half of the week.
The biking group set off at 9am for the hour-long drive to Gisburn Forest where we met Chris Young, our cycle coach.
The first group cycling split into a more confident and less confident group. The less confident group made great progress: Theo completing many laps of the cinder track and car park area; Naayle getting much more independent and riding long stretches unaided and Seeat and Alex rising ahead confidently along forest tracks.
The more confident cyclists in the morning group completed the planned ‘blue’ route well, mixing some single track and forest track. A couple of them completed the bottom ‘bumps’ of a downhill route.
The afternoon cyclists were very strong and confident. We completed the skills loop and then were straight into a snaking descent. The children climbed some tricky sections very well and showed very good bike control. Five children – Isobel, Cate, Reuben, Max and Frederike – completed an extra 15 minute section that included a zig zag ascent and a burms descent.
This evening, group 2 went caving and did very well. Hasnain got even wetter than everyone expected!
Due to itinerary changes relating to caving, we had some time to visit the viaduct and museum about the Settle to Carlisle Railway and the buiding of the Ribblehead viaduct.
This evening’s night walk was excellent. The children orientated OS maps and navigated some of the walk. We had some excellent conversations about nature, geology and things that we found on the walk.
