We have had another great week in Year 5!

Maths
This week in Maths, we have been learning about coordinates. We began by looking at coordiantes in the first quadrant, then learnt how to translate shapes on a grid, then moved on to translating shapes and points just using their coordinates. The children did a great job of remembering that the X coordinate moves from left to right and the Y coordinate moves up and down. Next week, we will be moving on to symmetry and reflection.

English
We have been learning about balanced arguments in English this week, which the children have been very passionate and enthusiastic about! We began by having a class debate on a range of topics, such as 4-day working weeks and whether children should be allowed to choose their own bedtime! Then, children picked a topic that interested them and thought of strong arguments for and against, with evidence and statistics to support their points. They chose some really interesting topics, such as the amount of screentime children should have or whether all children should be trained in first aid, and were interested to find out more about them. Next week, children will be using their research to write a balanced argument about their chosen topic.

Science
In science this week, we have been continuing our work on forces. 5KH completed an investigation on water resistance by testing how long different shaped objects took to fall through bubble bath, while 5Ke investigated how different materials caused different amounts of friction. We discovered that smoother surfaces caused the least amount of friction, whereas bumpier or rougher surfaces caused the most friction. The children in both classes worked really well to plan and conduct their investigations, recorded their results accurately and did a great job of explaining the science behind it!

Reminders
If you have not done so already, please ensure that you return your consent forms for our Malham trip by Monday. 5KH are going on Monday 11th July and 5Ke are going on Thursday 13th July.
Wednesday and Friday next week are strike days, however, Year 5 children should be in school as normal for PPA on Wednesday afternoon.

We hope to see lots of you at the camp over this weekend! Let’s keep our fingers crossed for some sunshine!
