Keeping Healthy in Year 2
English
This week in English, we put our instruction giving skills to the test as we helped Mrs Barker and Mrs Wilson to make a healthy sandwich. We quickly realised, when the teachers had butter spread on their hands and lettuce on their heads, that our instructions needed to be clear and precise! We then went on to writing some fantastic instructions for making our favourite sandwiches using a range of time adverbials and imperative verbs.
Time adverbials: Words used to show when something happens. First, then, next, after that and finally are examples of these.
Imperative Verbs: Also called ‘bossy’ verbs that we use in instructions or commands. Words like put, slice, chop and spread are examples of these.
Maths
In maths, we have been partitioning numbers in different ways using part-whole models and practical resources. We discussed strategies and looked at pattern spotting to help us when the numbers were partitioned flexibly rather than into tens and ones. We then had a go at writing number sentences to match our pictorial representations such as 56 = 30 + 26. We then moved onto looking at number lines to find missing numbers.
Please complete the number lines activities on Mathletics for extra practise!
Science
In science we have looked at the eatwell guide to find out more about a balanced diet. We planned what could go in a healthy lunchbox. Children were able to choose lots of delicious, yet healthy, foods to go in their lunch box. We are becoming more familiar with the food groups and making healthy choices.

Design Technology
We kicked off our new DT project this week by looking at a range of pop up books. We found lots of different ways to make a picture more exciting for example using a flap, a pulling slider or even a turning wheel! We all agreed that these made the books more exciting as they added an element of surprise so we are very much looking forward to designing and making our own. We then looked at how to make a simple slider. We created our own simple moving pictures with a character than can move horizontally or up and down!
Music
The children enjoyed our music lesson. They had fun warming up their bodies and voices ready to sing. This half term we are learning about pulse, rhythm and pitch. We started to learn our song ‘Music is in my soul’.
PE
In PE this half term we are going to be ‘Champion Gymnasts’. This week we practised different types of rolls and then linked them to another movement such as a jump or a balance.
In outdoor PE, we are working on teamwork. Here we are working in groups to see if we can cross the playground using only 3 hoops. Did anyone step out of the hoops?

Thank you! This really explains why Izzy came home saying Mrs Barker spread butter on her hands when making a sandwich!!!
