Year 4 Blog 22.9.23

We have had another super week in Year 4! We have packed lots of learning in and the children have continued to impress us with their attitudes and effort!

Maths
In Maths this week, we have focussed on number lines to 10,000. The children had to find missing numbers on number lines with varying starting and ending points, which meant they had to use their calculation skills to work out the intervals of the number line first. We also found out how to make sensible estimates on number lines to 10,000. The children had to ensure they worked out key intervals on the number lines first, including finding halves and quarters. Have a look at the video below for a recap!

English
In English this week, we have looked at how to write an explanation text. We began by looking at the key features of an introduction, main paragraph and conclusion of the text, before writing an example of each section together. The children then wrote their own explanation text about how to look after Hamlet, the White Elephant (from a Firework Maker’s Daughter). We were really impressed with the time conjunctions and fronted adverbials that the children chose to include.

Science
In our Science lesson this week, the children were set the challenge of making a bulb light up. They were given wires, a battery and a bulb and had to use this equipment to create a circuit. Only a few groups managed without any prompting! Eventually, the children recognised that they had to ensure their circuit was complete (with no gaps) and connect metal components to other metal components, to allow electricity to flow in order to get the bulb to light up. The children showed a good understanding of this concept after some experimentation and were able to create a range of different circuits to make the bulb work.
