Farsley Farfield Primary School

Year 1 – 20.10.23

Phonics

This week the children have continued to revisit the phase 3 phonemes/graphemes. We have looked at ‘oi’, ‘ear’, ‘air’, and ‘ure’. The children have also focused on the tricky words ‘you’ and ‘are’.

Maths

During our maths sessions, the children have looked at part-whole models. They have really impressed us with their understanding that parts come together to make a whole.

English

This week we have focused on rhyme. The children have been busy creating their own rhyming soup. Can they remember any rhyming words they used to make their soup?

In handwriting we practised the curly caterpillar letters q, o, e and s.

PSHE

We have been thinking about special occasions in PSHE this week and the different food and drink that might be associated with different celebrations. We discussed why the food we eat on special days is different to the everyday food that we eat. Then, we all drew a picture of some food that we had eaten on a special occasion.

Science

During our science lesson, we continued to look at trees. We investigated the enquiry question ‘Are all tree trunks the same?’. The children looked at three different trees on our school grounds (oak, silver birch and apple) and compared their trunks by taking bark rubbings and measuring their circumference.

Music

This half term the children have been busy practising songs to perform with instruments. Here are the final videos. We hope you enjoy watching them.

Reading and Phonics Meeting

Thank you to everyone who managed to attend one of our phonics and reading sessions. We hope you found it useful. Packs have been sent home to help support your children. Here are the PowerPoint slides for those who were unable to attend the meeting.

Temple Newsam Trip

To support our Great Fire of London history topic next half term we are going on a trip to Temple Newsam on Thursday 16th November. We have sent home a letter today with more information.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
