We visited the Stone Age!
What a wonderful week it has been! Even with the wet weather, we have been impressed with the children’s attitude towards their learning.
Maths
In maths this week, we have continued to learn more about how our number bonds to 10 can help us work out answers to 2- and 3-digit numbers. Using a number line and number bonds, children worked out solutions to various sums, making two jumps. Next week, we will be moving on to subtraction using this method.
English
Year 3 completed their alternative endings to the Stone Age Boy, and we enjoyed hearing about the different points in history they travelled to including Ancient Egypt and even the future! Children had to include an interesting ending to make the reader think about whether the characters really did travel to a new place. Some of the characters returned with flint and grains of sand. Was it all real?
History
3B learned more about the Iron Age and compared how materials were used and changed and what this meant for the growing community. They enjoyed discussing key differences and sharing what they thought to be the most challenging era and why. Most agreed the Palaeolithic period was the most difficult, with limited or unknown materials available.
P.E
We managed to stay out for the entire afternoon this week! In skipping, children practised the side swing and the cross-over technique. 3B continued with Athletics and participated in the 100m, 200m and 400m.
Stone Age Day
Year 3 loved being part of Stone Age Day and going back in time. They participated in various activities throughout the day, including working with Mr Harris and learning more about using tools and they used a bow and arrow to hit a target. 3SB even managed to find a pig hidden in our fields!
Using their understanding of the role of a hunter-gatherer and working in small groups, they travelled across the hall foraging for berries and animals. We were very impressed with the use of gesture, jump and turning when moving around.
During the day, we learned more about the role of speleologists. Children were fascinated to learn about the discovery of caves from around the world, particularly the Cave of Hands in Argentina, which included famous hand paintings. They used their inference skills to work out that the different size prints suggested that a family or a small group may have lived within or near this cave. After creating their cave paintings, they also thought their necks might hurt when painting images, especially on the ceilings after having a go at creating their own!
Children enjoyed using flint to make a small fire and they realised how difficult it was to ignite, especially in the cold weather! Overall, it was a great day and were really impressed with the children’s new knowledge and fantastic costumes. Within our jam-packed day, we even had time to roast marshmallows!
Cheer event
This week, some of the children also enjoyed taking part in a cheer event, which involved them learning a routine and performing in front of children from other schools.
Well done to our special mentions this week – Ayla, Alfie, Anya and Murphy!
Next week, both Year 3 classes will be visiting the synagogue and will be back before lunch. Boys will need to wear a head covering, for example a woolly hat or a cap. There will be small selection of skull caps (Kippah) available at the synagogue for children that don’t have a covering.
Monday 23rd October – 3SB
Thursday 26th October – 3B
Thank you to all parents and carers who have also visited our book fair, which has been on all week. We hope you enjoy your new purchases!
Have a wonderful weekend and try to avoid the muddy puddles!
