Reception News – 27.10.23

What a great first half term we have had in Reception. The children have all settled in well and made lots of new friends.

Phonics

We have learnt the phonemes/graphemes o, c and k this week.

This week our tricky word is ‘no‘. The children have been reading and writing this word. We have made some tricky word flashcards and these will be sent home every Friday. Please keep these in your child’s phonic flashcard envelope. The children just have to read the tricky words by sight, they can’t sound them out.

Reading

The children now have more phonic flashcards. Please continue to practise learning the letter sounds and have a go at blending and reading words like it, dog and mat. Books have been changed for the half term holiday, so please keep sharing them at home.

Maths

This week the children have been developing their subitising skills. They have continued to use ‘perceptual’ subitising – instant recognition – by saying the number of sounds that they can hear such as claps or drum beats. They have looked closely at small quantities and observed whether the quantity has changed or only the arrangement.

The White Rose Maths 1-minute maths app has lots of subitising games to play. This free app helps children build number confidence and fluency. It’s all about targeted work in engaging, one-minute chunks! Just download the free app and click on subitising.

Music

The children have enjoyed their music lessons this half term. They have learnt lots of new songs and have had fun exploring the instruments. They practised playing them loud, quiet, fast and slow.

Our Timeline

The children enjoy looking at the photographs on our class timelines. We have been talking about past, present and future with the children.

Amazing Owls!

We have arranged for the Yorkshire Owl Experience to come and visit the Reception classes on Wednesday 8th November. The children have all brought home a letter with more details.

Have a lovely half term holiday and we will see you all on Tuesday 7th November.
