Year 1 – 10.11.23
Phonics
We have started to learn the Phase 5 phonemes. This week we have looked at the diagraphs ay, ou, ie and ea. Your child will have come home with a small plastic wallet containing flashcards for these phonemes. Please ensure they are in your child’s bookbag every Friday so that we can add to them. We have also revised the tricky words her and was.
Geography
In geography this week we have been looking at London and some of its famous landmarks. We learnt that London is the capital city of England and located it on a map of the United Kingdom.
History
We started off this week by comparing London in 2023 to Tudor London. We learnt that over 300 years ago London looked very different. Most of the buildings were made out of wood and the houses were very close together. We also learnt that there was no electricity so people had to use fires for light, warmth and to cook food.
We then discovered that there was a fire in London in 1666. It spread across almost the entire city and lasted for four days. The children used sources including books, videos and diary entries to find out lots of facts about the Great Fire of London. We made posters to show what we know so far and what we would like to find out.
English
This week we have been writing facts about the Great Fire of London. We have been working hard to use sentence openers in our writing.
In our whole class reading session we used our reading dogs to enjoy a non-fiction text about the Great Fire of London. The children then used Rex the Retriever to answer some retrieval questions about what they had read.
Maths
We have continued to look at addition in maths this week. the children are now really confident in writing addition number sentences. They have been able to use their knowledge of addition to answer worded problems.
The children have also been working hard to answer reasoning and problem solving questions like this one.
Temple Newsam
We are going to Temple Newsam next week on Thursday 16th November. Children need to wear their school uniform and bring a packed lunch. Thank you to everyone who has made the payment on ParentPay.
Happy Diwali to all of our families celebrating this weekend.
Have a lovely weekend,
