Year 1 – 19.04.24
Phonics
Over the next few weeks, we will revisit all the phonemes/graphemes we have learnt this year. This week we have looked at ck, ff, ll, ng, ss, zz, ph, wh, ch, sh, th, qu, and ar. We have also revised the tricky words there and called.
Maths
This week the children have been learning to count in multiples of two, five, and ten. Please keep practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s at home.
English
Our English lessons have been packed this week! We read the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk. Whilst reading the story, a letter fell out from inside the book. Jack asked us to plant his magic beans. He asked us to imagine what we would find at the top of a beanstalk and challenged us to write descriptive sentences about our fantasy setting.
Our reading activity used Rex Retriever to answer questions relating to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.
We also focused on using different punctuation. The children read different sentences and decided whether they needed to end in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
Science
Following on from Jack’s letter, the children planted some beans and looked at the life cycle of a bean. We also looked at different types of seeds including marigold, poppy and chives and planted some of those too. We are looking forward to watching them grow over the rest of the half term!
PE
This half term we are working on our attacking and defending skills with a coach from Leeds Rhinos.
Caterpillars
We were very excited to receive some caterpillars this week. They are very small at the moment! We are looking forward to watching them grow and transform into butterflies over the half term.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
