Year 1 – 24.05.24

Phonics

This week the children have been completing phonics assessments. Most children are now confident in the phase 3 and phase 5 sounds. Please keep practising lots at home in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check which will be taking place week commencing 10th June.

English

This week the children have finished their chicken booklets. They have written about poo, added a contents and index page and designed a front cover. We are very pleased with our finished books!

Maths

Following on from last week and our work on half, the children have been looking at a quarter. The children worked on recognising, finding, and naming a quarter of an object, shape and quantity.

Geography

This week we looked at an image of the school grounds and discussed what we could see. We went outside with a map to find the key features including buildings, the hill, paths and playgrounds. The children then created their own map of the school grounds.

Science

During our science lesson, the children discussed the life cycle of a chicken. They then completed a cut and stick activity of a life cycle of a chicken and included this in their chicken books.

Butterflies

The children have enjoyed watching the caterpillars grow over the half term and were very excited to see them form into chrysalises. This week, we witnessed them emerge as beautiful butterflies and spent some time observing them in the classroom before releasing them outside.

RE

In RE this half term, we have looked at what it means to ‘belong’. We have discussed different groups we belong to including school, cubs and rainbows. We then looked at the features of a church and a mosque and discussed what it means to belong to a place of worship.

PPA

On a Friday afternoon, we have enjoyed a rotation of three activities during PPA time. This half term we have looked at the life cycle of a frog and the life cycle of a butterfly in our science activities.

In our cooking session we have enjoyed making a potato salad.

Rodley Nature Reserve

Next half term, the children will be going on a trip to Rodley Nature Reserve. You will have received a letter earlier this week with more details and we will send out a reminder closer to the time. Please return the permission slip by Friday 7th June. If you need another letter please let us know.

Have a lovely half term,

The Year 1 Team
