Phonics

This week we have focused on the phonemes/graphemes the children have struggled with (au/aw and ue/ew) and looked at the final ‘y’ sound. As with all our phonics lessons, we have practised reading and writing words with consonant clusters and wrote a sentence each day. The Phonics Screening Check will take place next week.

English

During our English lessons we enjoyed the story Billy’s Bucket by Kes Gray. We designed and labelled a fantasy setting in our own bucket and then wrote a fantastic description. The children have impressed us with their imaginations and their use of adjectives.

In our reading lesson, we used our reading dogs Rex Retriever, Inference Iggy and Vocabulary Victor to help us to answer questions about the book.

Maths

We have described position, direction, and movement. This included whole, half, quarter, and three-quarter turns. Some children found ‘left’ and ‘right’ quite tricky. Maybe you can test them at home!

We have also looked at the language of above and below, forwards and backwards.

History

This half term we will be investigating what the seaside was like in the past. The children ordered a set of pictures on a timeline using cubes to represent each year. We looked carefully at the pictures and decided if the pictures were of the seaside today or in the past. The children used the words: past, present, then and now.

PSHE

We had quite an exciting PSHE lesson. We discussed how to play and work co-operatively with others and the importance of teamwork to achieve an end goal. The children were challenged to move the whole team across the hall using only two mats. It was lovely to see the children talking to each other, sharing ideas and putting their plans into action.

Science

We have looked at different animals and discussed ‘What is the same?’ and ‘What is different?’. The children worked in groups to sort the animals. They decided how to sort the animals and managed to think of some great ideas including the number of legs, colour and size.

Computing

In computing we have started a new unit on pictograms. We found out that a pictogram is a visual way of gathering and displaying data. We then created a class pictogram on how we travel to school.

Rodley Nature Reserve

Next week the children will be visiting Rodley Nature Reserve.

1B will be going on Tuesday 11th June

1T will be going on Thursday 13th June

The children can come to school in non-school uniform, ideally leggings or tracksuit bottoms. We will be outside all day. Please can you ensure that your child is wearing appropriate footwear and a raincoat or sun hat/sun cream depending on the weather forecast.

There is no charge for this trip, but your child can put a donation in the collection box at the reserve.

The children need a packed lunch. (Please do not pack any nuts or food containing nuts in your child’s lunch).

Sam’s Safari

To enhance our animal science topic next half term, we have arranged for a company called Sam’s Safaris to deliver an exciting workshop with an array of different animals on Thursday 18th July. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Year 1 children – they certainly will get up close and personal to these animals. To cover the cost of the workshop we are asking for a contribution of £5.40 per child please. Where possible, we would like parents to pay using our online payment system – ParentPay by Friday 12th July.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
