Science superstars!

This week, Year 3 have been embracing the brighter weather, venturing outdoors, and making the most of every opportunity to run around, especially after completing maths assessments! We ended the week with a fantastic morning of auditions for the Science Superstar, which will be held on July 12th.

Maths

This week, we have continued our learning of time, focusing on comparing analogue clocks to digital clocks and telling the time using both. Most children could easily recognise where they might have seen a digital clock, with several of them wearing watches; however, analogue and Roman numerals on a clock were a little less popular! Using their understanding, children made different times using clocks and then had to convert this into digital time. We then moved on to working out time using seconds and minutes, and the children enjoyed comparing races by converting them into minutes and seconds and ordering.

The Sound Collector

Next week, we will be performing our version of the Sound Collector for other classes, and we are very excited. We have been practising lines and working as a team all week, and we are looking forward to their performances. Here is the poem performed by Roger McGough for you to enjoy!

Music

This week, we have continued our practice of ‘The Dragon Song’ and have been very impressed with the children’s perseverance in singing. Some notes are particularly challenging, and they have had to work hard to sing and play simultaneously at some parts!

Year 3 enjoyed listening to ‘Jai Ho’ in the singing assembly; some were brave enough to take to the stage to show others how to perform bhangra moves! One of the songs that we have been learning to sing is Colours of the Sun, and Year 3 children were selected to sing a quartet.

DT

Following our visit to the Royal Armouries, we enjoyed learning about Romans, especially soldiers and their armour. This week, we analysed shields, and the children enjoyed designing two shields and we will be making them next week as part of our DT project. The shields must be bold, symmetrical and simplistic. All the designs look fabulous, and we can’t wait to see what they look like next week! If you have any big pieces of cardboard suitable for a shield and any yoghurt pots, please send them in next with the children, as we will need them for our project.

Computing

3B have enjoyed being part of a rescue mission as trainee cadets on the way to Elphis! Unfortunately, some of our bravest cadets have injured themselves and the shuttle has broken down after meteors showered the planet! They worked in groups thinking of questions using email to gather information as soon as possible as well of choosing only 7 items to take onto the planet with them! After deciding what to take with them, they then travelled onto the planet, found the fellow cadets and travelled back to earth! Well done team!

Science superstar auditions!

Do you have what it takes to be a scientist? Lots of our Year 3 children believe they do, and our Friday morning was spent watching many exciting experiments. As part of their experiment, children had to explain the science behind what was happening, and we were very impressed with how they spoke and their confidence whilst sharing. We had lots of interesting experiments including volcanic eruptions, which we watched outside, ink swirling, magic milk, lava lamps and circuits! The children then had to make a vote and could only choose ONE to put forward to the final. The votes are in, and the children going into the final are…. Eesher and Meela!


Well done to everyone who entered. It was so much fun watching all the experiments, and it left many others inspired and wanting to carry out their experiments. Summer experiments maybe?! Here are pictures of the experiments for you all to enjoy!
