Oliver’s Vegetables

We arrived at school on Monday to find some vegetables in our classroom! We followed the trail and it led us to a book and a letter from a boy called Oliver!

Oliver asked us to visit the school farm to harvest some vegetables to make vegetable soup. We decided to visit the pigs and chickens too.

We looked at various pieces of kitchen equipment including chopping boards, peelers, knifes and blenders. We used the equipment to prepare our vegetables for the soup.

After the soup was cooked, we all had a taste. There were some mixed opinions!

English

In our English lessons we learnt that a recount is a type of writing that retells something that has already happened. The children wrote some fantastic recounts of our soup day!

Maths

In maths we have been looking at one more than and one less than a number within 10.

Art

We have really enjoyed our art lessons this week. On Tuesday, we focused on mixing primary and secondary colours to make a colour wheel.

On Wednesday, we looked at the work of Paul Cezanne. We were inspired to create our own still life paintings of vegetables. We used our knowledge of colour mixing to create some fantastic pieces of artwork.

Homework

Purple homework books have been sent home today with a task to be completed by Tuesday 8th October. Please support your child to complete this task.

Children should be reading 4 times a week for 10 minutes with an adult at home. Please write in your child’s reading record when they have read. It is recommended that children read their reading books more than once to help build up fluency and confidence.

Your child has access to Mathletics, Fast Phonics and Purple Mash. The log in details for these websites are stuck in the back of your child’s reading record. We have assigned some maths tasks on Mathletics for your child to complete this half term.

Phonics and reading meeting

We would like to invite you to attend a meeting for parents on Tuesday 22nd October. A letter has been sent home today with more details and it is also attached here. We will be covering how we teach reading and phonics in Year 1, how you can support your child at home and the statutory phonics screening check.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
