Year 2 News 27.9.24
This week we had lots of fun meeting up with out reading buddies. We talked about our favourite interests, drew pictures of each other and of course, shared our favourite books!
English
This week in our English lessons, we have been looking at traditional tales. We read the story of The Little Red Hen then had a go at sequencing the main events of the story before acting it out in front of the class! Our grammar focus this week has been on right choice words, choosing verbs and adjectives that paint a clear picture for the reader. We looked at developing our vocabulary together as a class then had a go at improving some simple sentences. We then rewrote the story of The Little Red Hen in our own words, adding in lots of extra detail.
Spelling
This week we have looked at the different ways of spelling words with the oo sound. We looked at words with the ue and ew digraphs and realised that the oo sound was at the end of these words. We also learned the homophones blue/blew and new/knew. We will check the children’s understanding with an informal test on Monday. This is usually some sentences with missing words for the children to add in.
Maths
In maths, we have been estimating where numbers would go on a blank number line. We had to first work out the scale of the number line, fill in the missing numbers and then draw arrows to show where different numbers would go. We then moved on to comparing numbers and amounts of objects using the language ‘greater’ and ‘fewer’.
Well done to those children who have already completed the Mathletics activities set. If you haven’t had chance yet, please have a go this weekend.
Computing
We enjoyed sending emails to our teachers and friends in computing this week. We discussed what an email is and the benefits of them compared to sending a letter. We then looked at how the 2email feature in Purple Mash works and had a go at sending some of our own. We recapped the importance of staying safe online and our digital footprint. Why not have a go at sending an email on this feature at home?
Science
In science this week we talked about why exercise is important. We tried out some different types of exercises and talked about how our bodies felt afterwards.
Thank you for the lovely homework on how you keep healthy. Next week we would like you to keep a 5-a-day diary! Check homework books today.

Art
We have done some more sketches this week focussing on adding detail and tone using pencils. Have a look at our beautiful kiwi fruits…
DT
It was our first DT lesson this week and we had lots of fun looking at moving parts in books and then creating our own pictures with a slider. We were very impressed with the children’s ideas, especially those who tried to make their pages stronger by adding more card to the back to help keep their handle in place.
