Fireworks and Circuits!

We have had another fantastic (if a little wet) week in Year 4. The children have been hard at work across the curriculum and we would love to show you some of what we have been getting up to!

English

In our English lessons this week, we have been preparing for our extended writes. We explored how to write each section of an explanation text in detail, with the children writig about the white elephant from ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’. We then had a go at researching how fireworks are actually made. For this, the children not only had to be able to identify relevant information but also had to make their notes clear so that when they come to use them next week, it all still makes sense.

We also spent some time looking at different examples of homophones. These words can be very tricky to get right due to having the same sounds despite having different meanings and, in many cases, spelling. However, the children all did very well with identifying which homophones should be used in their sentences. This week’s homework is a continuation of this.

Guided Reading

In guided reading, we read a description of the character ‘Rambashi’ and had a go at visualising and drawing him.

Maths

In maths, we have been continuing to explore the concept of place value. One of the most intreresting and complicated aspects that we have covered is the use of Roman Numerals. Though a lot of children initially found it tricky to get their heads round, by the end of the lessons, most children were able to read and write numerals using the following representations:

Science

In our science lessons this week, both classes have been learning more about how a circuit actually works. To achieve this, we started off by using the class to create a giant representation of a circuit. We used the lines on the playground as our wires and the children as the electricity itself. Our cell was tasked with handing out counters to represent energy, which the children would then carry to our lightbulb to use to create light. When the cell ran out of counters, there was no more energy to be shared and we had to replace it with a new one. The children showed a great underestanding of this (despite the unfortunate rain)!

Sport

Year 4 represented Farfield at two sporting events this week: a set of friendly football matches at Farsley Springbank on Tuesday, and a cross country event today. All the children did a super job!

General News

• This week we have sent out both Maths and English homework. This is due in on Wednesday 2nd October. If your child is not sure about any of it, please encourage them to speak to their teacher.
• Please also try to encourage your children to read at home. We aim for at least five signatures in their Extreme Reading record to say that they have read throughout the week.
