This week in Year 4

We have had another busy week in Year 4. As well as our usual lessons, we have started some end of term assessments and have also been busy learning the songs for the Christmas show.

English

In English this week, we have been reading, responding to and learning the poem ‘Granny’s Sugarcake’ by John Lyons. The children were interested to look at the words of the poem, many of which are written in Trinidad English, the dialect of the poet, who grew up in Trinidad and Tobago. We have enjoyed adding actions to help us learn the poem; the two Year 4 classes will be performing to each other next week.

Sugarcake!

Ah chile sweetie ting

a Trini granny could mek:

She grate de coconut,

put sugar in ah hot pot.

When it bubble-up like crazy

she stir in de coconut;

den she drop in some clove,

ah piece of cinnamon,

an few drops ah vanilla.

She screwin up she face,

Wen de sugarcake ready,

she spoon it out

on greaseproof paper,

Science

In science, we set up an investigation to find out about evaporation and condensation. We will observe what happens over the next week. What do you predict?

Geography

In geography, we continued to learn about the Rocky Mountains, this week focusing on the human geography of the Rockies. The children made travel leaflets to give information and encourage people to visit.
