A very practical week
The children have been very busy this week experimenting, making, practising and performing.
Our science work continues to focus on forces and this week we investigated how water resistance affects boat bow design. Working in groups, the children used modelling clay to create various shapes, which they then dropped through bubble bath, recording the time taken to reach the bottom of the container. The consensus was that the best shape for a bow was the classic, pointed shape.
DT
5KH spent a couple of afternoons designing, constructing and testing their Mars rovers, using motors to propel their vehicles. The range of practical skills used included sawing and joining wood, then strengthening the frame. They also made a circuit withg a switch and worked out how to transmit the motor’s power to the wheels. The class had great fun, even if it was fiddly and frustrating at times. The sense of achievement when their rovers finally moved was great to see.
Poetry Slam
5HB have been working very hard over the past couple of weeks to learn and perform their class poem, Walking with my Iguana.
Homework
Finally, we all spent an enjoyable Thursday morning watching the dress rehearsal of Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies. It was very encouraging and satisfying to see all the children’s hard work come together. As the public performances are next week, the homework this weekend is to practise lines, actions and songs in readiness for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Have a great weekend.
The Year 5 team.
