An Active Week in Year 5
It has been a vary active week in Year 5 with our football team taking part in their first match of the season (a narrow 3-4 loss to Horsforth Newlaithes) and a group of children taking part in an Active Travel event. Children have continued to work hard in class as well and engage well in their learning.
English
This week in English we have been planning and writing our newspaper reports. 5HB are slightly ahead of 5KH in this unit and have already finished and edited their work. Children have based these articles on one of the events in Homer’s Odyssey and have been challenged to use passive voice, reported speech and direct speech in their writing.
Maths
We have continued our unit on addition and subtraction in maths. Children have explored how rounding can help us to estimate our answers and how we can use inverse operations to check our calculations. If you would like to see the sort of work the children have been doing, this short video will give you an insight.
Active Travel
On Friday 6th October, a group of children visited the Brownlee Centre to take part in an active travel event. Due to the inclement weather, part of the event had to be changed but the children still enjoyed the opportunity to cycle around the track, go on a nature walk and complete a cycle obstacle course.
The obstacle course was led by Cycle North who will be coming to us in November to lead Bikeability sessions with all of the Year 5 children. These session will focus on road safety. This is normally completed in Year 6 but we have made the change because cycling is such a big part of our Year 5 residential. If you know your child can not yet confidently ride a bike it is crucial that they start to learn as soon as possible.
Have a lovely weekend,
Year Year 5 Team
