Animal Poo in Year 1!

Phonics

In phonics this week we have revised ie/igh/i-e/ue/ew/oo/ow/ou/er and ir. We have also continued to revise all of the Year 1 tricky words.

English

We have been talking about the visit from Sam’s Safari last week. We looked at all the photos of the animals we saw and held and remembered lots of facts about each animal. We looked at our time connectives to help us write a recount of the visit.

The children have done a fantastic job of including time connectives, sentence openers and adjectives in their writing.

Maths

In maths we have continued to look at numbers to 100. This week we have been looking at one more and one less than a number to 100. We have also be looking at and comparing numbers using the language of ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’.

Science

We have been continuing to find out more about animals. We focused on the diet of animals and how we can categorise animals based on this. We learnt some new vocabulary to help us do this –

Herbivore – An animal that feeds on plants.

Carnivore – An animal that feeds on meat.

Omnivore – An animal that feeds on both plants and meat.

To help us find out what animals eat we had to do some rather messy investigating. We dissected animal poo to look for evidence of plants or meat.

We found out about the diets of polar bears, lions, chimpanzees, hedgehogs, sheep and elephants.

History

We have already learnt so much about seaside holidays from the past and what they are like now. This week we are comparing what activities holidaymakers would experience now and in the past.

Computing

In computing we have finished our work on pictograms. The children rolled a dice 20 times and recorded the number that they had rolled. They collected the data and then used this to create a pictogram on PurpleMash.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
