Another Great Week in Year 4!

Rate this post

What a fantastic week we have had! The children have all worked really well and seem keen to explore what Year 4 has to offer!

Maths

In our maths lesson this week, we have been exploring different methods for partitioning numbers up to 10,000. We began by simply working with thousands, hundreds, tens and ones but once the children were comfortable with this, we started to think about how we could partition these numbers in more creative ways. For example: 4625 = 4000 + 600 + 20 +5 but it could also be 4625 = 2000+ 2400 + 210 +15.

English

In our English lessons this week, we have been further developing our understanding of explanation texts. After spending some time looking at some good examples of existing texts, the children were able to identify many of the key features of the genre. This will come in very handy when we begin writing our own explanations later this half-term. The children then had a go at creating a flow chart to explain a topic that they knew well (such as a sport or video game) to their partner. The hardest part was making sure that it was written as an explanation, not a set of instructions – a very fine line!

Other Information

  • This week, the children have all been given some maths and spelling homework to complete in their books. This work is due in on Wednesday 18th Septmember. This will give the children plenty of time to have a go themselves and then ask for help if needed.
  • Later this half-term we are going to be doing a DT project that will require that the children each have a cardboard box. The best boxes for this are those with a lid (such as a shoebox), though other sorts of boxes are also useful. The children do not need to bring anything into school yet, but it would be good to keep an eye out for any appropriate carboard boxes to put aside.

We hope that you all have a wonderful weekend and that those of you taking part in the Colour Run have a fantastic time!
