Dear diary, it’s been a busy week!
This week has been a jam-packed week with children completing assessments alongside their learning; somehow, we’ve managed to fit it all in!
Maths
This week, 3CW continued their learning on fractions and progressed to working with fractions on scales, as well as counting and placing different fractions on a number line. Children had to apply their prior knowledge of measuring using mm, m, and cm when working out other values, such as writing down the fraction of ribbon out of a metre.
3B have started a new unit on mass and capacity, focusing on scales on a number line. Children had to apply their division skills and understanding of intervals in fractions to determine the value of each part. They have also examined halves and quarters of different numbers and discovered some equivalences. Maths homework this week is based on class learning.
Dear diary
Year 3 spent their week writing a diary from the perspective of a crew member on the Endurance. Within their diary, they wrote about their daily life, the friends they made, what they did when they felt homesick or bored, and some even added how they felt when they overheard Ernest Shackleton say something no crew member should have heard. Children used a range of synonyms and actions to convey how they felt. 3B got into the role fabulously and nodded in agreement when peers were reading their diaries out! As part of spelling homework this week, we’d like children to write a short diary using some of the statutory spellings.

Science
3B had a mini workout this week to help them learn about the different muscles in their body, and how they contract and relax. Children loved the opportunity to show off their skills and went on to research additional muscles, labelling a body diagram.
P.E
The sun was shining, and Year 3 spent the afternoon outdoors! In fundamental sports, the children participated in a range of activities to develop their speed and accuracy and had a lot of fun! Using bibs, children worked in pairs and chased each other in a circular motion to try and catch the ‘mouse’ of the pair. When modelled, children thought that this was an easy task; however, when working in pairs, they found that it was more challenging than expected and were surprised at how long they went without getting caught.

They also played knee taps and had to try and tap their partner’s knees – not as easy as it looks but lots of fun!

They went on to work in groups and teams, chasing each other and developing their speed.

Climate change
This week, as part of our geography unit, we discussed climate change, its causes, and its impact. Children shared their understanding and discussed the impact climate change could have even in their local environment. Working in pairs and classes, children participated in discussions, thinking carefully about the steps that could be taken to improve things, which included switching off the lights when not needed, turning the tap off between brushing their teeth, and picking up litter. Children spent their time creating
informative posters to raise awareness.

Computing
This week, 3B have learning how to use line graphs on Purple Mash and interpret the data between line graphs. Children created tables and then transferred this data to create line graphs.
