Farsley Farfield Primary School

Determined, hard-working Year 4s…

English

This week in English, we have been continuing our exploration into legends, focusing on the stories of King Arthur and Robin Hood. We are still building towards eventually writing our own legends and a big part of that has been learning to use expanded noun phrases to add detail to our description. We really focused on unpicking each part, using a ‘stepping block’ approach to building our expanded noun phrases. Now that we know how to use them, the children should be able to use them more frequently in their own writing without having to break it down.

Maths

In maths, we have started to look in more detail at some of the times tables that children tend to find a little trickier to learn. We began by recapping the three times table, which then allowed us to use that knowledge to work on our sixes. We looked at a number of different methods to solve calulcations that we don’t know, including doubling multiples of three or using table facts that we already know to count on or back. The childrern did really well with this and have some homework set to develop this further. TTRS can also be used to consolidate this understanding.

General Information

This week, the children have all been given some maths and spelling homework to complete in their books. This work is due in on Wednesday 20th November. This will give the children plenty of time to have a go themselves and then ask for help if needed. This can also be supplemented by using TTRS, Mathletics, Reading Eggspress and Sspelling Shed.

Both classes have also managed to improve their Extreme Reading scores this week and we would like to see this continue even further! If you are able to support your child with their reading at home to continue this upwards trajectory, we would very much appreciate it.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Miss Levett, Mrs Sykes and Mrs Newsome
