“Give to me a fulcrum on which to plant my lever, and I will move the world.”
Science
Our Science work this week was looking at levers and how they provide mechanical assistance. 5HB investigated what happens if you lengthen a lever, using newton meters to measure the effort required to move a bottle of fruit juice. I was very impressed with the methodical way the class worked, especially when some groups repeated the experiment due to some unexpectedly strange results.
RE
This morning, the whole of Year 5 visited St John’s Church in Farsley. Rev Gareth Howles spent a very entertaining and engaging hour talking about the beliefs Christians hold regarding the covenants made by God to Abraham, Moses, David and Jesus. The children learned and revised their knowledge of the plagues sent upon the Egyptians and of the ten commandments. They also guessed how many Maltesers there were in a jug (representing the stars in the sky and the number of Abraham’s decendants).
(The paper aeroplanes at the end were just a bit of fun and nothing to do with the RE!)
Next week should be warmer, but that means that the school fields may be muddy again. Please ensure that your child has wellies. If you need a pair, there are quite a few unclaimed ones of various sizes that are free to a good home. Ask your child to speak to their teacher about looking for a pair.
Have a great weekend
The Year 5 team
