It’s the Final Countdown…

As the end of the year draws near, we in Year 4 just wanted to take a moment to say what a truly fantastic year we have had. The children have all worked so incredibly hard and there have been so many amazing moments, including some great events and trips. I wonder what the last few days will bring…

English

This week, we have been finishing off our work on haikus. We focused this time on creating poems that linked back to our class text – ‘Cloud Tea Monkeys’. To begin with, we recapped the events of the story and used our knowledge of the text to create some simple word banks that we could draw upon when pulling our ideas together. From here came the tricky part – creating the poems themselves. Despite the somewhat restrictive nature of haikus, the children did really well with this and were able to create some really lovely poems that followed the syllabic pattern of the style.

DT

In our DT lessons we have been hard at work creating the pop-up books that we planned last week. This required the children to put all of their prior learning around pop-ups, linkages and levers into practice. Although it was a little tricky to begin with (especially when it came to adding new pages into the book), the children soon got the hang of it. In the end, they created some really lovely books all about their time in Year 4 and managed to include some really creative uses of both pop-ups and levers. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to get any photos of the final products, but they should be making their way home soon for the children to share with you. We hope you enjoy looking through them as much as we enjoyed making them!

Other News

In addition to our usual lessons, we have also had some exciting events running this week. The biggest of these was of course, Sports Day. We had been doing lots of training for these events during our P.E. lessons but the children surpassed all of our expectations with the level of effort and enthusiasm that they brought on the day, despite the changeable weather. It was really lovely to see so many bright smiles from all of the children involved!

The children also had the opportunity to spend some time with their next teachers, with both classes being able to ask any questions they had about Year 5. Unsurprisingly, many of their questions were about residential! For now, the biggest pieces of guidance we can give the children to help them prepare for this would be to start developing some of the key skills that will be needed for the different activities. This includes being able to ride a bike, tie their own shoelaces and feel comfortable spending some time away from home (perhaps they could practise this by organising some sleepovers with friends and family).

We hope you all have a fantastic weekend and come back ready and raring to see what the last two days have in store for us!
