Multiplying, Dividing and Describing!

Maths

This week in maths, we have been continuing our work on multiplication. More specifically, we have been looking at how to mulitply and divide by 10 and 100. We used counters and place value charts to explore exactly what was happening when we used these numbers, noticing that the value in each column would move up or down depending on whether we were multiplying and dividing. We also noticed that counting the number of zeros (one for 10 and two for 100) would help us to remember how many columns we would need to move. The children showed a really good nderstanding of this, which we will continue to build on in future lessons. We also spent some time exploring how we could use calculations that we know to work out trickier ones (for example using 7 x 5 to work out 7 x 500). This lesson really reinforced how important it is that the children have a good understanding of their times tables and we do reccomend that they continue to practise them at home.

English

In our English lessons we have been working on our descriptive writing skills. We began by choosing one of three dragons from our class book ‘How to Train your Dragon’, which we would then focus on. Using both our imagination and references from the film adaptation, we spent a couple of lessons generating ideas not only about what our dragons looked like, but also how they acted, moved, sounded and even smelt. All of these ideas were collected together into a word bank that we could then use to develop our descriptions. Next week, we will hopefully be able to spend a little bit of time using our editing skills to make them even better than they already are!
