Once upon a time…
It has been a wet week, and even with all the indoor play and lunchtimes, the children have worked hard to remain focused.
Maths
This week, we ended our first multiplication and division units with a focus on the 3rd, 4th, and 8th timetables. Children enjoyed grouping items together and writing down multiplication and division sentences to match different pictures. Next week, we will begin the second part of this unit, including using column multiplication using 1 and 2 numbers. To support their number recall, children can use TT Rockstar.
Happily ever after?
This week, we enjoyed reading and watching short stories with alternative endings to traditional tales. Children enjoyed listening to the stories of ‘Red’ and shared what could have changed at the end including the characters and the story’s moral. Our focus tale for this unit is Jack and the Beanstalk, and the children wrote detailed plans and created story mountains, chunking the different parts of the story in preparation for our narrative writing next week. Be prepared to read about Jack, his mischievous ways, and the range of giants he encounters, including a baker, a gymnast, and a gardener!
Art
This week in Art, children enjoying learning about Vincent Gogh and attempted to recreate different parts of his sunflower painting.
P.E
It was a wet afternoon, but Year 3 managed to still do PE. During the second hour, children enjoyed bouldering, tag rugby and practising a new part of a dance sequence in dance.
3B enjoyed developing their team-building skills by creating different letters and numbers during the orienteering session.
History
This week, we focused on the significance of writing and discussed what our world would be like without the ability to write. We focused on the word ‘communication’ and what that looks like today and compared this to how it would look like without it. Children enjoyed learning about hieroglyphics and writing their names and hidden messages for others to work out. We then looked at the hierarchical society and discussed the different roles people had in ancient Egypt. Learning about the importance of writing and the role of a scribe led to an interesting discussion in 3B about the status of the scribe and why they weren’t ranked as higher.
PSHE
This unit is all about looking at our strengths and challenges that children might face. 3SB enjoyed thinking about their goals and the small steps they would take to reach them. 3B children looked at different strategies when looking at negative comments and ways to turn this around. This includes reaffirming what we can do and shared ‘put ups. We ended the lesson by creating positive bookmarks to remind us of our journey.
Reading challenge
This month the challenge was to read a text with the theme of ‘feelings’. Please remind children to add to their challenge sheets which can be found in their Google classroom. Next month, the theme will be ‘Animals’.
Well done to our special mentions this week – Alex, Hashim, Anya and Charlotte!
We hope you have a lovely weekend and hope all those that are unwell feel better soon.
Mrs Begum and Mrs Sykes
