Phonics

Our tricky word this week is ‘be‘. Can your child say this word in a sentence?

We have also learnt the phonemes/ graphemes ‘y‘ and ‘z‘. Can you use your phonic flashcards to make words that have ‘y’ and ‘z‘ in?

The children have enjoyed playing this game in school. It is a great game to help them practise oral blending of sounds and the segmentation of words into their individual sounds. Click here to play it at home.

Maths

This week we have been using our subitising skills (seeing the quantity without counting) to help our class puppet Gertrude learn this skill. We looked carefully at arrangements of dots and then closed our eyes to visualise and explain what we see. We have represented quantities in different ways and played a range of games to help match numerals to quantities.

PE

This half term we are developing our ball skills. We are focusing on pushing, bouncing and catching using our hands.

Music

The children enjoy their weekly music lessons. We always begin by listening to a piece of music and discussing it. Then we warm up our voices and sing a variety of songs. This week we used the claves and learnt the song ‘Choppity Chop’.

Understanding the World

The cold weather this week has helped us learn a lot about ice and how it is made. We have looked at bubbles and the different colours inside them. Counting them as we popped them was lots of fun! We experimented by making our own ice. Can your child tell you what was trapped in the ice?

We also visited the school farm and found lots of frozen rotten fruit!

RE

This week we have been discussing “Why do we need rules?” and “What makes us happy and sad in our classroom?” The children thought of some classroom rules and then drew happy faces to display around our classroom rules.

The children also enjoyed sharing their homework and talking about how they help at home. We are very impressed with how helpful Reception are at home. Well done – you are all great helpers!
