Rounding and Researching!

Maths

This week in maths we have been continuing our work on place value. We started off by exploring the concept of Roman Numerals. This meant that we had to not only know what each numeral represented, but also how they are then used to create different numbers. This proved quite tricky at first but the children soon got the hang of it! We then began to have a look at how we can round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. Again, the children showed a really good understanding of this, which we hope to develop further next week.

English

In English, we have been getting ready for our upcoming extended write. Since we are going to be writing an explanation text all about fireworks, it made sense to try and learn as much as we could about them. First, we decided on what information we wanted to gather and thought carefully about where we might be able to find the answers we needed. We also had some really good discussions about how to record the information clearly for future use and settled on a simple note form using bullet points, underlining or highlighting the really important pieces of information. Once we had all of the information that we needed, we worked together to create a clear flowchart that followed the process from start to finish.

Science

This week we have been continuing our work around electricity. Since the children did such a good job creating different circuits with their components last week, we thought it would be a good idea to dive into exactly how the circuits worked. To do this, we went out on to the the playground to create a human circuit, with the children acting as electrons moving from the cell through the wires. They showed a really good understanding of this process and were able to create some great diagrams in their books to explain what was happening.
