Farsley Farfield Primary School

Super Skippers, Impressive Investigators and Vicious Vikings!

This week has been absolutely jam-packed with activites that we in Year4 just can’t wait to share with you!

The biggest event of this week was, of course, the Skipping Festival. After a half-term of practise, we had the unenviable job of choosing just thirty children to take part in the event and though the decision was a tricky one, the children who were selected did a fantastic job of representing the determination and perseverance of Farfield children.

Meanwhile, the remaining thirty children spent the morning playing dodgeball and I have to say, they were some of the nimblest and most honest children I have had the pleasure of refereeing for. Some of the dodges and near misses were incredible to watch and there were so many children who were willing to admit that they had been hit despite it not being witnessed. Well done to all of Year 4 for their efforts in PE this week!

In Science, we have started to explore the concept of Sound. We began by searching for an answer to the question ‘Does something have to move for a sound to be made?’ To do this, we set up a variety of investigations to create sounds in different ways, some using actual instruments and others using classic favourites such as rulers and rubbert bands! The children made some fantastic observations when searching for their answer.

In History, we have kicked off our new topic on the Vikings by exploring a key element of their success – their longships. The children had to pretend to be Anglo-Saxon spies and were allowed only thirty seconds to look at a Viking longship before they had to return to their fellow Anglo-Saxons to report their findings and create their sketches. The children showed some fantastic teamworkthroughout this activity – making sure to focus on only one section at a time, sharing their findings clearly with their peers and making the best use of their limited time!

Homework

This week, we would like the children to complete at least one of the following activities in preparation for World Book Day next week. If the children would like to do multiple activities or even all three, that is also absolutely fine! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

  1. Create an entry for the ‘Read Aloud’ competition – The children can choose an extract of a book (perhaps their favourite or one that they are currently enjoying) to read aloud for about a minute and record themselves doing so. If they wish to add in additional details such as using props or decorating their ‘setting’, that is something they are able to do but it is not a requirement for entry. To enter the competition, complete this form and upload your video. The deadline is Tuesday March 4th at 9pm.
  2. ‘Read Your Way’ Photos – We would like you to send in a picture of yourself reading ‘your way’, showing us how and where you like to read. There are prizes for our favourites as well! Any photos can be emailed to your class teacher.
  3. Create an entry for the World Book Day Token – Using the provided sheet, the children should create a design for a new World Book Day gift card. We can submit any entries, so these sheets should be returned to the class teacher. For additional information or to look at previous winners, check out this link.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
