Trading, Oobleck and other strange goings on in Year 5.

We have had a busy and extremely fun week in Year 5 this week. The children havew worked hard to finish the multiplication and division topic in Maths and have on the whole done well in their end of unit assessments.

In Science we learnet about the difference between Newtonian and Non-Newtonian liquids. The children then made some Oobleck, which is a liquid but goes hard when hit with some force. Custard is another example of a liquid which behaves in this way. We then had enormous fun passing the oobleck along the line of the whole class like a hot potato and trying not to let it turn into a liquid. We just about made it to the end!

In English we have finished our collaberative writing of a Midsummer Night’s Dream playscript. The children worked together on a shared Google Document and have done a great job of writing and editing their playscripts. We are now practising and performing some scenes from the plays that the children have written. Our initial practises had some very humourous moments where boys played girls and lions were not very savage at all! We are looking forward to continuing to rehearse and perform these play next week.

In History we learnt more about trade across the Islamic Empire. The children thoroughly enjoyed recreating a Baghdad market place and trading different goods from different countries of the time. We learnt a lot and found out that we needed to be quick thinking and good at maths when negotiating.
