WB 19.2.24
We hope you all had a wonderful half-term break, filled with fun and relaxation! Can you believe we’re already more than halfway through the school year? Time flies when we’re learning and having fun! This week, the children have jumped right into our exciting new topics with great enthusiasm.
Maths
This week we have been learning about multiplying whole numbers by fractions. We began with unit fractions (where the numerator is 1) and moved on to non-unit fractions (where the numerator is more than one) and mixed numbers (a mix of a whole number and a fraction. Children do find this learning challenging and any support you can give them at home would be extremely beneficial. Below is a short video on multiplying a mixed number by an integer (whole number).
English
In English, we have begun our learning using the book ‘Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell. In guided reading children used their prediction and inference skills. As we started to read the story we collected our favourite expanded noun phrases, verbs and adverbs. We will use the vocabulary later in this unit as children write their own stories. The children seem to be really enjoying the story and this unit will be the perfect opportunity for them to showcase their creativity and imagination.
Geography
This week in Geography we started our unit on South America and the Amazon Rainforest. The knowledge Organiser for the unit is below. Please do spend some time looking at this with your child to help them to remember the ‘sticky knowledge’.
PE
We started our class tag rugby and circuits units in PE this week. In the second hour children are either going to ‘The Depot’, learning dodgeball or doing cross country. There are still some children who are not coming to school in appropriate PE kit. This is especially important for those doing cross country as our grounds are still very muddy!
Science
In science this week we completed an investigation into the viscosity of liquids. The children designed a fair test to measure how long it took different liquids to slide a certain distance.
