WB 22.1.24
It is hard to believe that we are over half way through this half term! The children’s learning is moving forward well and we are really enjoying this half term’s topics.
Attendance this week has been extremely low with lots of children suffering from a high temperature and nasty cough. We hope that those who have been poorly feel better soon and are able to come back to school next week.
Maths
In maths, children have been learning about how to multiply two digit numbers by two digit numbers. We began by using base ten or place value counters to which helped children to understand size, scale and place value. We then progressed to formal written methods. Below are some examples of the written methods we have been using in school, which might differ from how you were taught at school.
English
In English we have started to learn about A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Children have been getting to know the central characters and have become familiar with the plot. A lot of children initially thought that a Shakespeare play would be a bit boring but changed their mind after we watched some videos which simplified the plot for us.
If you are not familiar with the story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream these short videos will get you up to speed!
History
This week we have been continuing our learning about the Early Islamic Empire and children have been finding out about why Baghdad became wealthy. We looked at the famous Silk Road trading route and how that connected the world and helped Baghdad to become such an important and wealthy city in the Islamic Empire. Children’s favourite part of the lesson was when we turned the classroom into a marketplace. The children had to take on the role of merchants and trade the goods they transported from their part of the world. The children’s haggling and bartering skills were very impressive!
