WB 27.11.23
This week, our preparations for the Christmas production have surged ahead. As we move into next week, we will expect that the children will have their lines fully memorised, allowing us to focus on refining their acting and singing. If your child has lines to learn, please help them to memorise their role so they are fully prepared for the week ahead.
Below is a link to a list of parts in the play alongside details of the clothes the children should wear. If your child is not on the list they will be doing other jobs (such as props or technical support) which do not require a costume.
Maths
This week, the children have been continuing to learn about fractions by comparing and ordering them. They are expanding on their prior knowledge to sequence a set of three or more fractions. To support their understanding, we’ve used bar models, fraction walls, and number lines, allowing the children to visualise and comprehend the relative sizes of fractions more effectively.
To excel in Year 5 Fraction work, the children must view the set of fractions as a whole before determining their approach. While comparing numerators might seem like the best strategy, there are times when assessing the fractions together could still prove to be a more effective method.
Your support in reinforcing this understanding at home would be greatly beneficial. The workbook below will give you a flavour of the questions the children come across in this unit.
History
This week, we had an enriching visit from the Landmark Trust, who are actively involved in a two-year restoration project at the Grade I Listed Medieval Manor House, Calverley Old Hall. The team conducted an engaging workshop, guiding the children to explore the ongoing restoration efforts at Calverley Old Hall while delving into the historical narrative of the broader Leeds area.
We were so pleased that the children received praise from the group leaders for their exceptional engagement and exemplary behaviour during the workshop. They thoroughly enjoyed uncovering the sometimes grisly yet fascinating history associated with our local landmark.
It was a fantastic learning experience, and we’re excited about the enthusiasm our students showed in exploring our local heritage.
Science
In Science this week, 5HB have started their new topic of Forces. Our first experiment was designed to answer the question of whether heavier objects fall faster than light objects. Once we discovered that this is not the case, (follow the link to see for yourself https://youtu.be/74MUjUj7bp8?si=mFh1hZOoCn3uJmOK ) we investigated how to overcome gravity by finding the most effective parachute design when using a plastic bin bag and string. Various sizes of canopy were tested, along with the length of string used.
Homework
Homework this week will be worksheets on fractions and spelling. Please ensure your child completes their homework and hands it in by Wednesday 6th December.
Have a great weekend
Mr Beevers, Mr Hemming, Mrs Kroon, Ms Howells
