WB 3.6.24
Welcome back to the final half term of Year 5. It has been lovely to see all of the children back this week, and the residential trip seems like a distant memory (thankfully all of 5HB seem to have dried out!). All of the children have started the term positively, and it has been wonderful to have some sunny weather to match the mood.
English
In English, the children have begun a unit on persuasion. As I’m sure you already know, children are quite adept at persuading grown-ups. so they have enjoyed the opportunity to show us how persuasive they can be! This week, the focus is on using formal language and specific techniques to refine their persuasive arguments.
Here is a link to some videos of children attempting to persuade Mr. Harris to get rid of homework, add an extra playtime to the school day, or abolish the school uniform. The children did a fantastic job, although I’m not sure that Mr. Harris will be convinced by their arguments!
Maths
This week, we have started our unit on ‘Position and Direction’. The children have been able to transfer some of their map-reading skills to maths when solving problems involving knowledge and understanding of coordinates.
The children have also started learning about ‘translation’ (moving a shape without rotating or flipping it). Below is a video that gives you an insight into their learning.
Music
This week, the children in 5HB have really enjoyed learning about K-pop and performing the song “Look Into The Night.” K-pop is a style of pop music that began in the 1990s in South Korea and is now very popular all around the world!
Here is a link to a video of their performance.
PE
This week, the children have started to prepare for Sports Day, which (weather permitting) will take place in the afternoon on Wednesday, 10th July. There are a wide variety of races and events to choose from, and each child will take part in at least two races. One of the races in Year 5 is a duathlon, which involves both running and bike riding. It is always a very popular event, and many children want to participate. If your child would like to take part in this event, they should be a confident rider and ideally bring their bike and helmet to Sports Day on the 10th.
Homework
Homework this week will be a spelling worksheet in their homework books and some work to complete on mathletics.
Please also look out for a letter about this year’s PTA camp over which will take place on Saturday 6th July.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 5 Team
