Farsley Farfield Primary School

Week 3

What a delight to have some beautiful sunshine this week! It has made for some fabulous playtimes, but we have been very warm in the classroom which can make concentration a little tricky! The children are still working hard to try their best in class and we have had some super lessons and another lovely week.

Maths

This week our place value maths objectives have been:

  • Flexible partitioning of numbers to 1000
  • Hundreds, tens, and ones,
  • Finding 1, 10 or 100 more or less than a given number
  • Number lines to 1000.

The children have been really working hard at careful counting skills, identifying an amount and working out any changes in a 3-digit number.

English

In English and Guided Reading this week, we have been using our inference skills to look at pictures from The Stone Age Boy, and consider what it would have been like to live back then. We have also looked at an example of a diary entry and planned and written our own diary entry, imagining that we were living as a child in the stone age. We will be continuing with this theme next week.

Science

We have had a lovely lesson this week examining the suitability of different rocks are and considering which might be best to make a statue. The children in 3CW were really interested to know whether any of our sample rocks could be used to make fire. Unfortunately for them (fortunately for us!), we did not have the right sort of rocks.

History

This week we have been considering the question ‘Is the stone age man just a simple hunter/gatherer?’

3B spent some time inferring pictures linked to the stone age and shared their ideas with the class. They ended the lesson by hunting round the school grounds to find any items that they could use to help survive if they were hunter gatherers.

3CW looked at artefacts and made inferences about the actual use and material of the object.

PE

3B’s Multi-skills work involved working in partners to practise bowling skills and targeting stumps focusing on distance and power. 3CW’s Gymnastics work focused on perfecting good gymnastic shapes and balance. We also participated in lots of lovely games and activities in the dodgeball, dance and multi-skills classes too.

Well done to our special mentions – Bobby, Joshua, Matilda and Sev

Well done to our dojo champions – Irsa and Dawud

Reminders: Children are expected to read at least 5 times per week and have their reading record signed by an adult and brought in daily.

Homework this week is to practise some words from the Year 3 spellings list using the pyramid to write one letter at a time. 3CW identified eight 5-letter words to practise: ‘build‘, ‘busy‘, ‘early‘, ‘earth‘, ‘eight‘, ‘fruit‘, ‘learn‘ and ‘often‘. Children can also log in to TT rock stars online if they can remember their log in details from year 2.

Have a lovely weekend.
