Welcome back!
It’s been a wet but wonderful first week back, and we have been impressed with the way children have re-adjusted to being in school.
Maths
This week, we have continued learning about place value, focusing on using the formal method. We began the week using the column method with no exchange. We then moved on crossing ten and children used place value counters to practically exchange ten 1s for 1 ten. Once children were confident, they used the formal method to complete calculations crossing 10. Next week, we will learn how to subtract 10 using the column method. Homework this week is consolidating their learning.
English
We began our week by transforming our classroom into a circus! Our new class text is ‘Leon and the Place Between’, and children enjoyed looking at a range of pictures, trying popcorn and using their senses to describe this setting using expanded noun phrases. We also looked at adverts to identify their features and we’ll be using our understanding to write a fantastic advert persuading others to visit the circus next week. 3SB enjoyed working in groups to persuade their peers to visit their circus through role play. We hope their adverts will be full of magic tricks and, of course, candy floss and popcorn!
Geography
This term, we’ll be comparing Yorkshire to the Alps as part of our Geography topic. This week, children recapped the continents and learned more about the equator. They enjoyed using their atlases to find different countries in Europe and some cities.
P.E
PE choices have changed this term, and children have enjoyed participating in different activities. This term, 3SB will be doing athletics, and 3B will be doing gymnastics. This week, 3SB enjoyed on the learning about the importance of posture through a range of activities where they had to run looking up and down, hands behind their backs and running on their heels. They then ended the session using the better technique when racing against each other.
In Cross Country this week, children worked in pairs using their understanding of a pace to run to different points, which is part of our cross-country routes on our school grounds. We will be continuing to build on this throughout the term.
R.E
This term, we have started a new unit on Christianity. Our first lesson focused on the importance of the bible. 3B began their lesson by sharing their favourite and memorable books, drawing on their importance and how they look after them. We learned more about the messages in the bible and how it is made up of different books, including gospels, prayers, and teachings. Children enjoyed watching clips of the bible being read and looked at different bibles in class.
Music
Year 3 will be learning a range of songs as part of our end-of-school performance this term. Year 3 enjoyed practising the Sherlock hoodie and a helping hand, and we can’t wait for you to hear their progress! The lyrics and music have been shared on Google Classroom.
Local walk
On Monday, Year 3 intend to go on a local walk as part of our topic of Rocks and Soils, depending on the weather. It will be during school time, and we intend to return before break.
Well done to our special mentions this week – Harrison, Faye, Leila, Lauren!
Have a lovely weekend, and for all those celebrating Diwali, we wish you a weekend full of light. 3B enjoyed listening to the story of Diwali and thank you to Meela for bringing in special items to show and share with her class.
