Welcome to Year 3!
This week has been exciting for the children returning to school, ready for a brand-new and fantastic year in Year 3! They enjoyed playing on the fields, and both classes were excited to visit the pigs and chickens. They have already impressed us with their attitude towards their learning.
Maths
This week, we started our first maths unit of the year: place value. The children enjoyed representing numbers up to 100 using the maths apparatus. They learned more about partitioning and have enjoyed exploring different ways to partition numbers using the part-whole model.
English
This week, Year 3 enjoyed learning about different word classes. The children used various coloured strips to write and share adjectives, nouns, verbs, and adverbs. They then used their choice of words to form short, silly sentences! We ended the week writing down what we got up to in our first week and will be using this to write a diary next week.
Science
Our first unit is all about rocks and soils, and Year 3 enjoyed becoming rock detectives to learn more about the features of different types of rocks. After sharing their ideas with their peers, they drew and labelled various rocks – some ventured into the playground to see if they could find any of the rocks they learned about during the lesson! We wonder if they might be able to find some over the weekend.
RE
Our first RE unit is focused on Judaism, and 3B enjoyed learning about the meaning of a covenant through the story of Noah’s Ark. Working in groups and pairs, they shared their thoughts on what it means to make a promise, what happens when you might break a promise and promises that they have made.
History
Our history topic for this term is all about the Stone Age, and 3B enjoyed sharing their thoughts on this period along with curious questions from the class discussion. Our first lesson was focused on recognising just how long ago the Stone Age was, and children enjoyed sharing their timelines using examples of starting Year 3 and leaving Year 2. They then wrote down some key points. Here are some of the questions that they had about the Stone Age:
How did they find water? How did they cook? What did they wear, and what was this made of? We’re hoping to answer some of these questions throughout the term!
PE
Here are some pictures from PE this week! 3B will be doing Multi-skills, and 3CW will be doing Gymnastics this term. Next week, children will also be doing Dance, Dodgeball or Multi Sports as part of their PE afternoon.
Well done to our special mentions – Irsa, Abdul Wahaab, Elijah, Oliver and Madison!
This week, children have been sent home with their reading records and a reading book. Children are expected to read at least 5 times per week and have their reading record signed by an adult and brought in daily. They may need reminding to begin with but we hope with time they will be ready with their reading records for you to sign.
Reminders
All children are expected to have indoor and outdoor shoes, and it may be a good idea to write their names on the soles – we have noticed that many children have identical pumps indoors! Children will also need to bring in their own snack for break time and their water bottles.
Have a lovely weekend.
Mrs Begum, Mrs Connolly and Mrs White
