Year 1 – 04.04.25
Phonics
In phonics this week we have completed a phonics assessment with all of the children. Most of the children have made lots of pleasing progress. Please continue to read with your child at least 4 times a week and write in their reading record that you have done so. We have taught all of the Year 1 phonemes/ graphemes now, remember to keep using the flashcards so that your child is secure in all of the sounds. Their Fast Phonics log in details are in the back of their reading record to further support with phonics at home.
English
In English this week we have looked at concrete poems. We started the week by looking at some daffodils and coming up with lots of right choice words. We used these words to write our own daffodil concrete poems.
Maths
In maths this week we have continued with our unit on measure. We started the week looking at mass. We used balance scales to measure and compare the mass of different objects.
We then looked at capacity and volume. We learnt that capacity is how much liquid a container can hold and volume is how much liquid is in a container.

Science
In science we finished our topic on senses. We read the story ‘The Princess and the Pea’ and used our sense of touch to find out how many layers of different materials would stop us from feeling the pea.

Geography
We recapped the four seasons and learnt that we are currently in spring. We used our weather station to monitor and record the weather this week and then went on a spring scavenger hunt and spotted lots of signs of spring!

Computing
In computing we finished our unit on coding. The children used code blocks to create their own scene.

PPA
We have had lots of fun in PPA this half term!
We have made a fruit salad in cooking.

We have been continuing to learn how to programme BeeBots in computing.

In art we have been looking at the work of Piet Mondrian and been inspired to create our own abstract pieces of art using straight lines and primary colours.
In RE we have looked at special occassions and being thankful.
Homework
There will be no homework sent home during the holidays. Please use this time to read lots with your child and encourage them to go on Fast Phonics, Mathletics and Purple Mash.
Have a lovely break,
The Year 1 Team
