Year 1 – 08.03.24
Phonics
This week the children have become ‘Phonic Detectives’. A letter with further details was sent home on Monday. As we work through the phonemes, each child will have a chance to become a class ‘Phonic Detective’ and will receive a certificate and a small prize. We have sent home three sheets this week and we hope you have been able to support your child to complete them. The first part will have been completed in class. The sheets do not need to be returned to school.
English
We have started to create our very own senses booklet. Throughout this week and next, the children will be writing facts about each of our senses. This week we have focused on our sense of smell and sense of hearing.
We practised forming the capital letters I, J, K and L in our handwriting lesson.
Maths
During our maths sessions, the children have looked at counting forwards and backwards within 50. They have also looked at the tens and ones in numbers and spent time recognising and representing them.
Science
Following on with the topic of senses, we investigated the enquiry question ‘What smells do we love and hate?’. The children used their sense of smell to decide if they liked or disliked the smell of lemon, toothpaste, garlic, vinegar, soap and cheese. We compared results to discover which smell was liked the most.
World Book Day
We had lots of fun on World Book Day. The children had a lovely assembly including a visitor from Truman Books, spent time with their Year 5 reading buddies making bookmarks and sharing stories and created story stones.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
