Year 1 – 12.01.24
We hope you all had an enjoyable break. We have had a fantastic first week back!
Phonics
This half term we will be focusing on the phase 5 phonemes. The children are now recognising most of the phase 5 graphemes and can read words that feature these. We are working on spelling words which include phase 5 phonemes, especially the alternative graphemes. For example ai, ay, and a_e.
English
In English, we read the story ‘The Girl and the Dinosaur’ by Hollie Hughes.
We then chose our own dinosaur picture to write a description about. The children are doing a fantastic job of using adjectives in their writing.
Maths
In maths, we have been looking at numbers up to 20. We have been practising counting forwards and backwards and looking at how many tens and ones are in each number. The children have also been representing the numbers as numerals, words, and pictures.
Science
In science, we looked at this enquiry question.
We spent time predicting what might happen, discussing how we could find out the answer to the question, and then set up our experiment.
We observed the ice throughout the day and found out that the ice melted the quickest with no jacket on. The children were amazed to find out that the ice with the jacket on gave us less water, meaning it had melted less. We discovered that the jacket stopped cold air from escaping and that kept the ice cold. We learned that the jacket acts as an insulator for the ice!
Music
In music, we have started to learn our new song for this half term. We have had lots of fun learning the words and playing the glockenspiels.
PE
In our Thursday PE lessons this half term we will be working on ball skills.
PPA
On a Friday afternoon in PPA, the children will be doing a rotation of activities. These will include BeeBot algorithms in computing, making scrambled eggs in cooking and creating Matisse-inspired art work.
RE
In our RE lessons we are learning about celebrations. We would like it if all the children could share a photograph of them at a celebration such as a wedding, christening, Eid, Diwali, a birthday party, conformation, bonfire party, Christmas, Easter or any other celebration they have enjoyed. You can email your photograph to emma.tomlinson@farsleyfarfield.org.uk or rebecca.broadhead@farsleyfarfield.org.uk
Mathletics
We now have access to Mathletics again. The children have all been excited about exploring Mathletics in class. Their login details are stuck in their reading records. You can access Mathletics via the website and it is also available as an app.
We have assigned two activities on Mathletics for your child to complete as homework. Please feel free to complete more of the activities that are also on there.
Children need to earn 1000 points in a week to earn a certificate. The certificates will be celebrated in our special mention assembly.
Fast Phonics
Your child also has access to Fast Phonics. Fast Phonics follows the way that we teach children to read in school. Unless your child has completed all of the peaks please encourage your child to access Fast Phonics instead of Reading Eggs.
We have also assigned some dinosaur books to your child’s online library to enhance our topic this half term. To access these books and many more please click on the ‘library’ area when logged onto Reading Eggs. Your child will also have the option to create their own online reading journal.
Newsletter
A copy of our newsletter has been sent home this week. It has lots of information about this term. A copy is also attached here.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
