Farsley Farfield Primary School

Year 1 – 13.10.23

Phonics

This week we have continued to revisit the phase 3 phonemes/graphemes. We have focused on ‘ar’, ‘or’, ‘er’, ‘ur’, and ‘ow’. We have also looked at the tricky words ‘me’ and ‘be’. The children have really impressed us with their independent sentence writing.

English

On Monday we received a letter from the Kitchen Disco.

They asked us to create a new character to join them! We had lots of fun drawing a new fruit or vegetable character! We then wrote some sentences describing our new character and what they liked to get up to.

In reading, we introduced our reading dogs and discussed which reading skill each of our dogs can do.

We then enjoyed the story Witchety Sticks and the Magic Buttons by Helen Stephens. We stopped during the story and used Predicting Pip to make a guess about what might happen next. The children came up with some fantastic ideas.

In handwriting, we practised forming the letters c, a, d, and g.

Maths

We have been ordering numbers in maths this week. We discussed the terms smallest and greatest and then ordered numbers from smallest to greatest and greatest to smallest. We have also looked at number lines and used them to identify numbers, find missing numbers, and count the amount of ‘jumps’ between numbers.

In our daily mastering number lesson we have been focussing on 5 and looked at all the different ways we can make 5.

The fruit also left us a challenge! We used balance scales to compare the mass of the fruit and discussed heavier, lighter and equal weights.

PSHE

In PSHE we have been learning to play different active playtime games. We spoke about how playtime games make us feel and how to make good choices when playing with others.

We came up with some rules to help us keep playtimes safe and happy:

  • Use kind hands and feet
  • Help someone if they are hurt
  • Always take safe risks
  • Use kind words
  • Try to cheer our friends up
  • Include everyone who wants to play
  • Explain the rules to someone else who wants to play
  • Listen to each other

We then had lots of fun playing different games!

Art

We have been painting our clay fruit sculptures in art this week.
