Farsley Farfield Primary School

Year 1 – 15.09.23

Phonics

This half term we will be revisiting the Phase 3 phonemes/graphemes. We will also revisit some consonant clusters and write sentences. In Year 1 there are new games to learn and play. The children have really impressed us with their willingness to try new things. This week we have revised ‘j’, ‘v’, ‘w’ and ‘x’ as well as the tricky words ‘I’, ‘no’ and ‘the’.

English

This week we are learning all about each other’s families and how they are similar and/or different from others. The children have drawn their own family picture and done a fantastic job of labelling it.

Maths

This week we have been using numbers to give facts about ourselves. We have also been building numbers within 10 out of cubes. We have then represented these numbers in different ways including as a picture, numeral and a word.

PE

We have started our new PE topics which are dance and team building. 1T are extremely lucky to have a dance expert from Northern Arts leading the way. 1B will have this pleasure next half term.

History

This half term we will be answering the question ‘How have I changed since I was a baby?’ We read the story ‘Once There Were Giants’ and discussed how as humans we are babies, then children and then adults. We placed photos of familiar people on a timeline and discussed who was the youngest and oldest.

Next week we will be looking at baby photographs and discussing how we have changed since we were a baby. If possible, please send in a labelled baby photo of your child by Thursday 21st September for us to use in our history lesson. Alternatively, you can email the photo to rebecca.broadhead@farsleyfarfield.org.uk or emma.tomlinson@farsleyfarfield.org.uk and we can print them in school.

PSHE

In our PSHE lesson this week we discussed our school rules which are ‘Ready, Respectful and Kind’. We talked about how we could show that we are ready to learn, respectful to everyone and our environment and kind to ourselves and others.

Art

We have created some fantastic drawings and paintings of rabbits and hedgehogs to display in our class. We discussed the features of the animal and different painting techniques we could use.

Homework

The children will bring home a purple homework book with this week’s homework in today. The homework book is not due back until Tuesday 26th September. On the alternate week, spelling or phonics homework will be sent home in a smaller red book.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
