Farsley Farfield Primary School

Year 1 – 17.01.25

Phonics

In phonics this week we have revised the phase 5 digraphs oy, ir, ue and aw. We have also practised reading and spelling the tricky words ‘little’ and ‘one.’

English

When we arrived at school on Monday our classrooms were a huge mess! Lots of chairs had been tipped over and there were some large footprints.

We followed the clues and discovered that a T. rex had been to visit us! He asked us to find out lots of facts and write them in the T. rex booklet he had left us. We will continue with these booklets next week.

We practised the curly caterpillar letters c, a, d and g in our handwriting lesson.

We also enjoyed a non fiction text called ‘Fossils’. We used Rex Retriever, Vocabulary Victor and Inference Iggy to help us to answer questions about the text.

Maths

We started the week by using cubes and ten frames to identify one more and one less within 20.

We then looked at number lines to 20. We used them to identify different numbers and worked hard to fill in missing numbers.

Science

On Wednesday we received a letter from a very worried dinosaur called Tina Troodon. She left a bit of a mess in 1T’s classroom.

Her legs are so long that every time she lays an egg they keep cracking! She asked us to investigate which material would be best for her to make her nest out of to stop this from happening. We had lots of fun dropping eggs from a height onto various materials to see which would protect the egg best. We found out that cotton wool and bubble wrap would protect the egg the best.

Geography

This week we have spoken about seasons. We know that there are four seasons in a year and that we are currently in winter. We monitored the weather throughout the week so that we can compare it to the other seasons later on in the year.

Computing

In computing we have started our topic on algorithms. We learnt that an algorithm is a set of simple instructions used to get to a desired outcome. We all became pupil robots and followed each others instructions.

PSHE

In PSHE we looked at feelings and life changes. We spoke about how when different things happen this can affect the way that we feel. The children were able to identify how they felt when starting a new club, going on holiday, moving house or when a new baby brother or sister arrived.

PE

We have started our new PE units for this half term. On a Monday we will be working on ‘Functional Fitness’ and on a Thursday we will be looking at Multi Sports. This week we practised our ball skills.

Music

In music we practised adding chime bars to this half term’s song.

Family Learning

There are still some spaces if you would like to take part in this free course!

Have a lovely weekend,
