Year 1 – 17.05.24
Phonics
In phonics this week we have revised the trigraphs air, ear and ure. We have also revised the digraphs aw, au, or, oi and oy. We have continued practising writing and spelling the phase 2, 3 and 4 tricky words.
Maths
In maths we have started a new unit on fractions. This week we have learnt that a half is one of two equal parts of a whole. We have recognised and found half of an object, shape and quantity.
English
In English we have started to write a non-fiction booklet on chickens. We have looked at the features of a chicken and their habitat. We will continue to write our booklets next week.
Science
On Wednesday afternoon, we visited the chickens on our school farm. Mr Harris told us lots of amazing new facts that we will be able to use in our booklets. We really enjoyed feeding the chickens and collecting their eggs. We had a sneaky visit to see the pigs too.
Geography
In geography we looked at the four points of a compass. The children enjoyed learning the mnemonics ‘Never Eat Shredded Wheat’ and ‘Naughty Elephants Spray Water’ to help them remember North, East South and West. They used their knowledge of compass points to direct the characters Odd and Izzi around a grid.
PSHE
In PSHE we have continued to look at feelings. We enjoyed the story The Colour Monster by Anna Lllenas and thought about what things make us feel certain ways. The children could give lots of examples such as ‘I feel happy when I’m with my family’ and ‘I feel sad when I fall over’.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
