Temple Newsam

Year 1 had a fantastic time at Temple Newsam on Thursday! We took part in a Great Fire of London workshop where we got to act out the historical event and see real objects from around the time of the fire.

Phonics

In phonics this week we have continued to learn the Phase 5 phonemes. This week we have learnt oy, ir, ue and aw. The flashcards for these phonemes will have been added to your child’s set in their book bag. We have also revised the tricky words all and they.

English

This week we have enjoyed the story Vlad and the Great Fire of London by Kate Cunningham.

The story follows the journey of Vlad the flea and what he experienced during the fire. The children used this book as inspiration and thought about what they might have seen, smelt, heard, and felt if they had been alive in London during 1666. They have written some fantastic descriptions and used some amazing vocabulary!

In our whole class reading lesson we used Rex the Retriever to answer some retrieval questions about the book.

In our handwriting lesson we practised the tunnel letters n, m and h.

Maths

In maths this week we have looked at subtraction. We have learnt that subtraction means to take away. We have practised the crossing out and the number line method to solve subtractions. The children have also been writing subtraction number sentences.

Geography

We started our geography lesson by looking at this image of London and discussing why there are so many buildings in London today. We thought about what all the buildings might be used for.

We learnt that buildings are a human feature because they have been built by humans. We then learnt that a physical feature, such as the River Thames, occurs naturally and is not built by humans.

Science

In science, we started our new unit on materials. We looked at lots of different objects and discussed what they were made out of and how they felt. We then sorted objects into hoops based on the material they were made out of.

Computing

In computing, we had our first Purple Mash lesson. This week we have practised logging on to Purple Mash and creating our own avatar. Your child’s Purple Mash login details are in their reading record if they would like to continue with this activity at home.

PE

In PE this half term we will be continuing with dance. This half term 1B will be having a weekly lesson with a dance teacher from Northern Arts. 1T will be completing a dance topic on ‘growing’. In our other PE lesson, we will be looking at running.

Reading Challenge

We have a new reading challenge for 2023-24! This year we would like children to read a book each month that fits in with each monthly theme. November’s theme is Light and Dark. Teachers will be guiding children when choosing books and giving ideas about each monthly theme. Children can choose a book from the library or a book at home to read each month then add it to their chart which will be stuck into reading records. When they have completed each monthly challenge, they can earn a dojo. At the end of the year, children who have completed all of the monthly challenges, will be included in a prize draw! Good luck!

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
