Year 1 – 18.10.24
English
Our English lessons were all about rhyming this week. We read lots of stories that rhyme and the children selected objects that rhyme and created rhyming soup! The children did a fantastic job of reading their rhyming soup aloud to the class.
Maths
In maths, we started our unit on addition and subtraction. We introduced part-whole models and used them to split a whole number into two parts and to combine two parts to make a whole. We used the stem sentences “___ is a part, ___ is a part, and ___ is the whole,”.
Phonics
In phonics we revised the phonemes oi, ear, air, and ure. We have now revised all of the Phase 3 phonemes. Please keep using the flashcards sent home in reception to revise these sounds.
Science
In science we investigated the enquiry question ‘Are all tree trunks the same?’. We looked closely at the trunks of an apple tree, a silver birch tree and an oak tree. We then measured the circumference of the trunk and recorded the results in a table.
PSHE
In PSHE we looked at food. We discussed how food we eat on special occasions is different from the food we eat everyday. The children then drew a picture of some food they had eaten on a special occasion and labelled it.
Phonics and reading meeting
Our phonics and reading meeting is next Tuesday (22.10.24). Please try to attend either the in person meeting in the infant hall at 2:40pm or the online meeting at 5:00pm. The link to the online meeting will be sent out on the day.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
