Farsley Farfield Primary School

Year 1 – 21.06.24

Phonics

In phonics we have revised the sounds ch, ph, qu, sh, th, wh, oa/oe/o-e/oe, a-e/ai/ay and ea/ee/e-e/ey. The children are becoming very confident reading and writing these sounds in words and sentences. We have also revised all of the phase 2, 3 and 4 tricky words.

English

This week we have written a recount of our trip to Rodley Nature Reserve. The children have done a fantastic job of using the time connectives first, next, then, after that and finally to sequence their writing.

Maths

In maths we have continued to look at numbers to 100. We have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones, creating number lines within 100, identified one more and one less than a number within 100 and compared numbers using the language of greater than, less than and equal to.

Is your child confident in counting from 0-100? Can they write the numbers from 0-100? Please keep practicing this lots at home.

History

In history, we have continued to look at seaside holidays in the past and compared them to seaside holidays today. We identified lots of differences like bathing machines and the fact that sun cream had not yet been invented. We also identified similarities including enjoying ice cream and building sand castles.

Science

This week we have looked at classifying animals. We have learnt that animals can be put into groups including mammals, amphibians, birds, fish and reptiles based on their features. The children have enjoyed finding out more using the link on the image below.

Computing

In computing we have continued with our work on pictograms. This week the children rolled dice and gathered data about how many times each number was rolled. They then used Purple Mash to present this data as a pictogram.

Sam’s Safari

To enhance our animal science topic this half term, we have arranged for a company called Sam’s Safaris to deliver an exciting workshop with an array of different animals on Thursday 18th July. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Year 1 children – they certainly will get up close and personal to these animals. To cover the cost of the workshop we are asking for a contribution of £5.40 per child please. Where possible, we would like parents to pay using our online payment system – ParentPay by Friday 12th July.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
