Year 1 – 22.11.24
Temple Newsam
The highlight of our week has been our fantastic trip to Temple Newsam. The children were thoroughly engaged in the Great Fire of London workshop and had a fantastic time at the farm.

Phonics
We have learnt the phase 5 digraphs wh, ph, ue and oe. These flashcards have been sent home with your child today. Please keep practising these at home. We also revised the tricky words my and said.
English
In our English lessons this week we have enjoyed reading the poem ‘A tiny, burning flame’. This poem is all about how the Great Fire of London started and spread across the city.
We looked at different types of poetry and learnt that a concrete poem takes the shape of what it is about. We decided to write some fantastic concrete poems all about fire.
In handwriting, we practised the tunnel letters b, p and u.
Maths
We have been looking at fact families this week. We started looking at the two addition and two subtraction facts that could be written about one part whole model and then moved onto writing all eight facts. It has been some really tricky maths and the children have all tried very hard. We will continue with our work on fact families next week.
History
In our history lessons we looked at the key events of the Great Fire of London and sequenced them into a timeline.
Science
This week we have continued with our unit on materials. We looked at the term ‘waterproof’ and what it means. We then tested a variety of materials to see if they were waterproof or not and recorded our findings in a table.
Christmas Performance
Every child has been given a part in our Christmas performance this week. If your child has a speaking part, their lines have been sent home this week. Please help your child to learn their lines at home. We will be having our first KS1 rehearsal on Tuesday next week.
Homework
Spelling books (red) have been sent home today. Please help your child to practise these spellings at home and return the book on Tuesday 3rd December. Homework books (purple) are due in on Tuesday 26th November.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
