Year 1 – 24.11.23
Phonics
This week the children have learnt the phase 5 phonemes wh, ph, ew/ew, and oe. The flashcards for these sounds have been sent home today. We have also learnt the tricky words my and said.
Maths
During our maths sessions, we have been learning about fact families. We have learnt that we can get four addition and four subtraction facts from one part-whole model to make a fact family.
English
Following on from our Great Fire of London workshop, the children have written a recount. They have worked hard to use time connectives such as first, next, then, after that, and finally to sequence their writing.
History
The children have really impressed us with their knowledge and understanding of the Great Fire of London. During our history lesson, the children created a timeline of events.
Science
This week we have continued to look at materials and their properties. We carried out an experiment to find out which materials are waterproof. The children had lots of fun and discovered that plastic, tinfoil, and cellophane are all waterproof materials.
PSHE
The children have been learning how to keep safe and manage risk. We spoke about who we could ask for help if we did not feel safe and sorted out real and imaginary dangers. We also spoke about secrets and discussed how some secrets are not safe to keep. We then listened to some different secrets and used our thumbs to decide if they were safe secrets to keep.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
